Wadi Bani Habib

Place: Lost Villages of Oman
Wadi and abandoned village of Habib

Wadi Bani Habib is situated within the mountains of Jabal Al Akhdar, continuation of Al Hajar mountains close to Nizwa. Located 2000m above sea level, the Wadi consists of abandoned villages and fruit palms.

Last inhabited 40 years ago, the structures cling to the rocky mountain surface of Jabal Al Akhdaralso known as ‘Green Mountain’. Lush Pomegranate and Apricot orchards helped sustain the life of the villages.

Oman abandoned or lost villages are home to ancient houses and castles and suspended in time.

Wadi Bani Habib is a ruined village that lies wrapped around the bottom of the valley.

Reaching to the village is simple and straightforward. Needs to climb a large number of stairs to get to the base of the Wadi after which a short trekking gets to the first house of the settlement. The interior of the rooms are cooler than the outdoor temperature contributed mainly by the stone and mud walls.

The architecture of the buildings and layout of the structures are similar to small mountain towns in UAE. ‘Falaj’ system of irrigation is an interesting and unique method which distributes water towards farm lands.

Modernization made people leave the Wadi and their houses which made people move out from the beautiful village’s ( now its ghost town) and became a tourist map for people visiting Jabal Al Akhdar.
